Albert Cumming arrived in England with the 42nd Battalion prior to embarking for France in October 1916 to reinforce the 49th Battalion. Instead he was transferred to the 31st Battalion which in July had suffered more than 500 casualties at Fromelles. Nineteen days later Albert was killed in action near Flers. He was buried close to the battlefield but after the war his grave could not be found.
