Meritorious Service Medal citation: "For meritorious service and devotion to duty during the period 25th February-17th September 1918. This N.C.O. has performed the duties of Battalion Orderly Room Sergeant in an exemplary manner, and has been of great assistance to the Adjutant in relieving him of much of the administrative work during operations when the Adjutant was otherwise urgently engaged. On the 24th April at Bonnay, when the village was being heavily shelled with gas and high explosives, Sergeant Kelly personally packed up and ensured the safe custody of valuable records and papers of the battalion."
