In Egypt in March 1916, Erskin Caldwell was transferred to the 47th Battalion and in July joined his new unit in France. Five weeks later he was wounded by a shell blast and re-joined his unit in October. He then developed chronic rheumatism and spent four months hospitalised in England before being invalided to Australia in August 1917.
