George Brown trained at the Grantham Machine Gun School from June 1917, transferred to the 25th Machine Gun Company in August and arrived in France in September. In April 1918 he was wounded in action by gas and was hospitalised at Camiers, re-joining his unit in June. He was severely wounded in the chest by gunshots in September and evacuated to Birmingham’s 1st Southern General Hospital. He returned to Australia in January 1919 and was discharged in April.
