Margaret Halpin enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service in November 1917 and embarked for India, posted to the 44th British General Hospital in Deolali. After 16 months she returned to Australia in April 1919 and, in September, became Matron of Toowoomba’s newly-opened Simla Convalescent Hospital for returned soldiers.
