Hans Christopher's initial enlistment ended after four months at Enoggera camp when he was discharged as medically unfit. His second attempt was successful and he eventually arrived in France in August 1917. After three months he was evacuated to Norfolk War Hospital suffering from 'trench feet'. His condition did not improve and in June 1918 he was invalided to Australia. He was discharged in August, aged 22.
