Herbert Phillips arrived in France in September 1916 via Egypt and England. He spent two weeks in hospital with influenza before re-joining his unit in France in October. In action nineteen days later he received a gunshot wound to his hip. He was evacuated to the 38th Casualty Clearing Station then transferred to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Rouen as “dangerously ill”. He died of his wounds nine days later.
