James Phillips arrived in England in December 1916 and transferred to the newly-raised 5th Machine Gun Battalion in April 1917. He landed in France in September. He returned to England in May 1918 to attend Machine Gun School at Cambridge. On 21 October he contracted influenza and was admitted to Cambridge Hospital where he died from the disease eleven days later.
Meritorious Service Medal citation: “His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Forces in France during the present war.” (Awarded 18 June 1918)
