Brother of 7042 Private Robert Gerald Conway (KIA) and 1310 Corporal Arthur Edward Conway.
John Cornelius Conway enlisted in Toowoomba on 26 July 1915 but failed to arrive at Sydney for his November embarkation with the 5th Light Horse 12th Reinforcements. In December in Sydney he re-enlisted by using the alias John Walker, and embarked with the 19th Battalion 13th Reinforcements in July 1916. He arrived in France in November soon after the 19th Battalion's heavy losses at Flers. He was killed in action at Gueudecourt near Flers after just three weeks at the front. His body was never recovered.
