Notes

Alice Kemp had impressive nursing credentials, including Matron of Longreach Hospital for four years, when she joined the Australian Army Nursing Service as a Staff Nurse in May 1915. She embarked from Brisbane in June with doctors, nurses and soldiers of No 1 Australian General Hospital unit destined for France. In England she nursed at No 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford and Lord Derby War Hospital, Winnick (where she was awarded the Royal Red Cross medal) before joining No 1 Australian General Hospital at Rouen, France in March 1917. She was promoted to Sister in October 1918, spent five months in England after the Armistice and returned to Australia in May 1919.
