Norman Coote landed at Gallipoli in May 1915. In October he contracted dysentery and was hospitalised in England. He arrived in France in March 1916 with the 2nd Field Ambulance. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in March 1918 and returned to Australia in November. He was discharged in March 1919, aged 23.
