Paul Hamilton arrived in France in June 1917. In October in Belgium he was wounded in action by shrapnel near Ypres and invalided to Aldershot. He re-joined his unit in France in April 1918 and transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion. In July he contracted influenza which led to pneumonia. He was hospitalised at the 5th Casualty Clearing Station at Crouy where he died eleven days later. He was 23.
