Percy Patrick arrived in France In January 1917 but within three weeks had developed a serious case of trench feet. He was hospitalised in Rouen then transferred to Birmingham’s 1st Southern General Hospital, returning to France in June. In September at Polygon Wood he was wounded in action with a severe gunshot to the head and evacuated to King George Military Hospital, London. He returned to Australia in January 1918. He had just turned 21.
