Richard Gleeson served at Gallipoli from May to December 1915. He arrived in France in March 1916 with the 1st Machine Gun Company. In July he was wounded in his right arm and admitted to Bristol’s Beaufort War Hospital. He had returned to duty while in England when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in January 1917. He returned to Australia in March. He died on 5 March 1919 at his mother’s home in Toowoomba and was buried at Toowoomba General Cemetery. Newspaper reports stated “He had been gassed on two occasions.” Although he had been wounded he was never gassed.
