When Richard McGrath arrived in Egypt he was assigned to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade 6th Battery. He landed in France in June 1916 and in January 1917 became a driver with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade 51st Battery. He was killed in action in Belgium on 12 December and buried at Westhof Farm Cemetery the next day.
