Brother of 2556 Private Thomas Joseph Baker (KIA). 

 

Robert Baker arrived in France in December 1916. At Polygon Wood in Belgium in September 1917 he was wounded in action by multiple gun shots that fractured his right femur. After two months in hospital at Wimereaux he was transferred to Oxford’s 3rd Southern Hospital for another eight months. In August 1918 he was discharged in England to become a munitions worker under the Australian Munition Workers Scheme. He returned to Australia in February 1920.
