Stanley Watson was born Stanley Cowell but adopted his father George Stanley Watson’s surname. He arrived in France in September 1916. A week later he was slightly gassed but spent many more weeks in hospital with other ailments. He was killed in action in Belgium on 17 March 1918 at Messines. He was 21. His effects were consigned to his mother aboard SS 'Barunga' which was torpedoed. Although all hands were saved, all the cargo was lost.
