Charles Brown arrived in France in December 1916. In January 1917 he contracted mumps, was hospitalised in Boulogne and re-joined his unit three weeks later. In May he was diagnosed with chronic rheumatism and bronchitis and transferred to Norfolk War Hospital. In July he was invalided to Australia.
