‘Davie’ Butler landed at Gallipoli in May 1915. Ten days later he was severely wounded in action with a gunshot to his left arm and another that fractured his skull. He was hospitalised in Alexandria, then in Manchester. He was invalided to Australia in January 1917 and discharged in May.
