George Coombes developed pneumonia in January 1916 soon after arriving in Egypt and was hospitalised at Heliopolis. He was discharged to his unit in February but was re-admitted in March with tuberculosis in both lungs. He was invalided to Australia in April. He died in Toowoomba on 25 May 1920 and was buried at Toowoomba Cemetery. Newspaper reports stated his death resulted from war injuries, “While serving in France he had been gassed” but he had never left Egypt or been gassed.
