John Buchanan arrived in France in December 1916 and transferred to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade. In August 1917 in Belgium he was wounded in action by gunshots to his right shoulder, was hospitalised in France and re-joined his unit in November. He contracted influenza in September 1918 and was invalided to England. He returned to Australia in January 1919 and was discharged in March.
