Lionel Claussen arrived in France in April 1916. In July at Pozieres he received gunshot wounds to the head and legs and was hospitalised at Le Treport. He soon became 'dangerously ill' and was evacuated to England where, in November, his legs had to be amputated. He was invalided to Australia eight months later.
