Sydney Cochrane arrived in France in April 1916 and transferred to the 1st Divisional Signal Corps. In May 1917 he transferred to the 1st Anzac Wireless Section. He was wounded in his neck and left thigh in May 1918 and hospitalised in England. He remained in England until returning to Australia in January 1919, aged 22.
